NEW TITLE: Jolt: Accelerating the Rate of New Product Innovation

Session: Supply Chain Optimization

Event Type: Masterwork

Time: 2:15pm - 3:00pm

Session Chair: Thomas Zacharia

Speaker(s): NEW SPEAKER: Loren Miller

Location: C1 / C2 / C3

Abstract:
In 1992, Goodyear made the strategic decision to invest in modeling and simulation in order to reduce costs from a build and test product development process. That strategic decision resulted in the development of analysis software that runs in parallel on large Linux clusters. This presentation will describe the difficulties overcome to model tire performance and the business benefits that have been realized by its use.

NEW SPEAKER: Loren Miller
Director, IT(RDEQ) & Physics Research, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company
Loren Miller was named Director of Information Technology for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Research, Development, Engineering and Quality organizations (RDE&Q) on January 1, 2001. In this position, Miller has global responsibility for IT applications and infrastructure for research, tire development, process engineering, and quality systems. This responsibility includes Goodyear’s high performance computing clusters and network, knowledge-based engineering tools, and Open Innovation/R&D infrastructure. Since 2004 Miller also has responsibility for Physics Research, which develops fundamental knowledge of tire, composite, materials, and surface physics. From 1993 to 2000, as Director of Tire Performance Modeling, he was responsible for managing the development of computer modeling and simulation for the company’s worldwide technical group and for its technical relationship with Sandia National Labs of Albuquerque, N.M. Miller joined Goodyear in 1966 as a Lab Technician. After graduation from Iowa State University in 1968, he became a Research Physicist and Manager of Tire Uniformity 11 years later. In 1981, he became Manager of New Products Development; in 1983, Project Manager for Corporate R&D; and Manager of Tire and Materials Science in 1987. Miller earned his master’s degree in physics from the University of Akron in 1971. Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies.
